The Illuminating Engineering Society’s Annual Conference August 9-11 in Boston Massachusetts provides a range of educational programming—including workshops, seminars, immersive experiences, tours, networking, and paper and poster presentations—on the art, design, science, and research of lighting relevant to lighting professionals, educators, and other design disciplines. As always, professional education is paramount. Lighting professionals will have their choice of various CEU credits through participation at the conference.
The 2018 Annual Conference will foster personal and career growth through educational and networking opportunities and enable attendees to earn CEU credits through participation. The theme of this year’s conference is “Light.Balance.” (#IESLightBalance)
The conference begins Thursday August 9 on Opening Night—the Illumination Awards Gala, followed by 2 exciting days of learning and opportunity to earn CEU’s, networking, skill sharpening, product demonstrations and time to relax and enjoy the camaraderie of your peers, catch up with old friends, meet new people.
CONFERENCE SCOPE
The IES Street & Area Lighting Conference is the only conference of its kind dedicated to improving the outdoor lighting business of electric utilities and energy service companies. We continue to provide an open forum for end -users facing the same questions regarding relevant products for specific application, lighting controls, bench marks from other users in the lighting community, and milestones reached by municipalities, utilities and DOT’s. We strive to maintain a small community feel, creating a great opportunity to network with industry peers through seminars with speaker Q+A, breakout sessions to discuss issues in-depth, an exhibit hall and many networking events with speakers and peers in a comfortable and open atmosphere.

Mr. Livingston will review TM-30, discussing color quality, measuring color rendering properties, and recommended values.
Jason Livingston is the principal of Studio T+L, a Brooklyn based firm specializing in architectural lighting design and theatre planning and design. His current projects include lighting interactive multi-media experiences, corporate offices, and houses of worship, as well as the planning and design of university and professional theatres. In addition to his design work, Jason is Co-Chair of the IES Color Committee, teaches lighting at design in New York City, and has written a book on lighting design Designing With Light: The Art, Science and Practice of Architectural Lighting Design.

This expansive theme relates to numerous aspects of how light and darkness affect our vision, health, behavior and experience. The objective of the conference is to provide educational sessions and experiences relevant to the audience of lighting professionals, academics, and peripheral design disciplines. This year’s theme is bringing focus to the powerful interrelationships between light affects and light effects. Faith Baum is a Principal of HLB Lighting Design in New York City and a founder of Illumination Arts, an architectural lighting design firm formerly located in Bloomfield, NJ. Faith’s work takes her across the U.S. and reflects her passion for creating spaces that engage users, instill pride and define the character of a place or the brand of an owner. This is seen in her lighting designs for all types and sizes of assignments, from large public infrastructure projects to boutique office environments. With more than 30 years of experience in lighting design, her work has been featured in industry and non-industry publications and she has been a speaker at a variety of conferences and workshops.
Faith was honored to be recognized by NJBiz Magazine as one of the 50 Best Women in Business. She served on the Boards of the IES-NJ and DLF-NY and on the IALD Membership Committee. She is an active member of the Transportation Research Board and contributed to their Bridge Aesthetics Sourcebook.

This seminar will give an overview of what PoE means, the current state of the technology and how it can be deployed in the context of LED lighting.
We will explore in detail how PoE nodes can be used to power and control luminaires as well as what some of the trade-offs are when converting conventional LED luminaires to a PoE-based approach. There will also be an analysis of what the current limitations and benefits of this technology are.
Finally, some recommendations will be made for the successful deployment of a PoE project in the context of integrating lighting.

SPEAKER | Michael Simla, CTO @ LumenWerx
Michael Simla is the Chief Technology Officer for LumenWerx ULC. Michael embarked on a lighting career immediately after he graduated from \ McGill University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Michael began his career with Future Electronics. Submerging himself into lighting and honing his skills, Michael soon caught the attention of the soon to be founder of LumenWerx, Morris Feldman. Michael was asked to join the team and head up the technology division in 2014. Michael’s passion has assisted in LumenWerx becoming one of the fastest-growing lighting manufacturers in North America.
Michael’s innovation has contributed to LumenWerx having products featured in the IES progress report each year from 2015 to 2019, with 12 products in total. In 2018, Michael was selected by the IALD top 40under40 and the only manufacturer to make the list.
